Peter Kell will assume the role of Independent Chair of the Australian Financial Complaints Authority’s (AFCA) consumer advisory panel.
He becomes only the second Chair of the AFCA Consumer Advisory Panel (ACAP) since the panel’s establishment in March 2019.
Mr Kell is a former Deputy Chair of the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC), a former Deputy Chair of the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) and a former Chief Executive of consumer group Choice.
“We are very fortunate to have Peter Kell join us as Independent Chair of ACAP, he is a well-respected consumer advocate and former regulator, who has deep knowledge of consumer protection and our regulatory environment,” Chief Ombudsman David Locke said.
Mr Kell said: “Consumer organisations support thousands of people every year and have unique perspectives that can help inform AFCA’s work. I look forward to working with members of ACAP and AFCA on important issues impacting Australian consumers.”
In making this announcement, Mr Locke thanked the outgoing Chair Peter Gartlan for his commitment and service in the role over the past five years.

About AFCA
The Australian Financial Complaints Authority (AFCA) is a non-government ombudsman service providing free, fair and independent help with financial disputes. It is a one-stop-shop for consumers and small businesses who have a dispute with their financial firm, over things such as banking, credit, insurance, advice, investments or superannuation. Where an agreement cannot be reached between parties, AFCA can issue decisions that are binding on financial firms.
